Big Kentucky Buck: Comb's Velvet Giant

I just noticed the first bucks last weekend shedding their velvet. I have two giant typcials I've been watching that are still in velvet. In honor of big velvet bucks we'll spotlight the Hurley Combs Jr velvet buck. It's Kentucky's all time biggest buck in velvet from Casey County scoring 205 6/8.

8 days til bow season............weather forecast

Looks like we may get a break in the weather for the opening weekend of Kentucky's bow season. Looks like the long term forecast is calling for temps in the 70s for Saturday and Sunday. That sounds a whole lot better than 90! I'm excited. I saw 5 shooter bucks last weekend out changing my scout camera battery. I'm fired up.

Kentucky's WMAs

Kentucky has a ton of fantastic Wildlife Management Areas open to the public. With hunting getting more expensive and finding a place to hunt is tougher than ever, it's nice to have Kentucky's WMAs to hunt. Most offer hunting for most of bow and even crossbow season. Gun hunts are usually limited to quota hunt draws.

Here's Fish and Wildlife's WMA guide. Enjoy.

Kentucky Elk Video from KY Afield-ELK TOURS

Elk are a great thing to me in Kentucky. It seems a lot of Eastern Kentucky residents don't agree. I was lucky enough to get drawn a few years back. Here is a great video on Kentucky's Elk herd and the tours you can go on to see some.

Time to be thinking about quota hunts.

You have to call in your Kentucky quota hunt applications during the month of September. Some of these areas offer a really good opportunity to take a nice buck or put some meat in the freezer. Most areas have used a 15 inch rule on bucks for the last 3 to 7 years in some cases. I hunted Green River WMA about four years ago and really liked the area. It was 85 to 90 degrees both days on November 3rd and 4th of that year so the hunting was tough. Ballard County is a great area. If you're drawn there, you have a real shot at a horse. Pennyrile had a huge non-typical taken from it last year.

To apply for
quota hunts, call:
1-877-598-2401
During the month of September
only, hunters may call toll-free to
apply for deer, pheasant, rabbit,
quail & waterfowl Quota Hunts.
Applications for all five types of
quota hunts can be made at the
same time. Hunters should tell the
operator they want to apply for a
Kentucky quota hunt when calling.

Dumb Hunting Product of the Week

The amount of hunting products being marketed is just getting out of hand. Every week, I'll pick the hunting item I will never purchase. If you bought all these items, you'd need a tractor trailer to get it all to the woods.

My least favorite item of the week is the In-Sight Hunting Mirror. If I bought this product, I'd kick my own butt. It's a mirror you can clip to your hat or stand so you can look behind you so you can limit your movement.

If you are crazy and want to give away $14.95 of your hard earned money........here is the address.
